Soccer Positions

GOALKEEPER
Organize defense before/as opponent is transitioning to offense and attacking.
Keep defenders pushed up and offensively minded when we have the ball so you have space to win a a long ball played by the opponent.
Your role will be similar to that of a sweeper: give support and depth; see entire field.
Begin our offense with confidence and composure.

SWEEPER
Vision of entire field, and be vocal about what you see.
Also a shot preventer, organize those in front of you to prevent shots from being taken.
Demand entire team to step up when opponent passes ball back.
Push up- if high pressure on ball, step. If low pressure on ball, give depth.
If 1v1 contain and force, wait for recovery defender.

STOPPER
Work closely with the sweeper on defense.
Stay with a mark.
Must drop back for the sweeper if the sweeper challenges.
Support the center midfielder early.
You will usually play between our defensive 18 and the center line.

OUTSIDE FULLBACKS
MARK, TRACK your player, never leave their side when they are on offense.
Get up immediately when we are transitioning to offense.
Cover and balance weak side defensively.
Create opportunities for yourself offensively.

CENTER MIDFIELD
Generally two touches or less, you are in one of the areas on the field where the other team will try to double early and often.
Check to, layoff, change fields either with a turn or by laying it off to support underneath.
Center circle is your domain: get in and out of it often and check to ball with integrity.
Basically 50% offense and 50% defense.

OUTSIDE MIDFIELD
Crosses the ball in for the forwards
Uses the width of the field
Stays wide on offense and marks the other team's outside mid on defense
Basically 50% offense and 50% defense
Get open on offense and find your mark on defense

SUPPORT(withdrawn forward or Offensive Mid)
Never a marking role, but should be aware of runs through by opponents backs or stopper, can help on D, but must be in good position to check to ball when we are beginning our attack.
Look for 1-2's (give-n-go), check to, layoff, spinoff with speed, others will play off your runs.
Freedom to roam and check to any ball, keeping in mind our objectives.

FORWARDS
Possession: Must be able to keep possession, shield, turn beat players, frame and finish.
50% of the time take on defenders, 50% of the time use your teammates.
Confidence to mix it up, creativity and ability to recover quickly if you make a mistake.

Runner: Target for long balls into space, win and take players on or use others.
Much of the time on sweeper, keeping them near their box and drawing him with you when you make a run in front of him.
Your speed and decision making are deadly and will force the defender to lose confidence and second guess.

EVERYONE
Strive to be the hardest working player every practice and every game.
Respect coaches, teammates, opponents, referees, and self.
Trust teammates and earn their respect.
Don't step on the field unless you want the ball and want to create opportunities for others.
